Sports Vision Assessment

A Sports Vision Assessment is a specialised evaluation designed to assess how effectively an athlete’s visual system functions in sporting environments. While standard eye tests focus on visual clarity and eye health, Sports Vision assessments evaluate how efficiently the eyes and brain work together under conditions of speed, movement, and pressure.

This assessment forms the foundation of all Sports Vision care, providing a clear understanding of visual strengths, limitations, and performance-related demands.

How Is a Sports Vision Assessment Different?

Traditional eye tests measure how clearly you can see letters on a chart. Sports Vision assessments focus on functional visual performance, including how well you:

  • Track and follow moving objects

  • React to visual information

  • Judge speed, distance, and timing

  • Maintain awareness of your surroundings

  • Process visual information under pressure

These skills are essential for sport, yet they are not routinely assessed in standard eye examinations.

What We Assess

Each Sports Vision assessment is structured and standardised, while still being tailored to the athlete’s age, sport, and level of participation. Depending on individual needs, testing may include:

Eye Health

The first step is to confirm that the eyes are healthy and functioning with no pathological problems.

Visual Acuity & Prescription

To ensure clear vision and healthy eyes as a foundation for performance.

Depth perception & Binocular Coordination

Assessing judgement of distance, spatial awareness, and timing. Most importantly - how the two eyes function together.

Contrast & Colour Vision

Functional vision tests that assess the eye’s basic ability to process colour and detect subtle differences in light and contrast, reflecting how well the anatomical eye functions in real-world conditions.

Eye tracking & focusing speed

Evaluating the ability to follow moving targets accurately and shift focus efficiently. We make use of a specialised Eye Tracker which accurately tracks the eye movements up tt a single degree.

Reaction time & coordination

Assessing how quickly visual input is processed and translated into movement, using our Reaction lights measuring to the millisecond.

Peripheral awareness

Measuring awareness and response to visual information outside central vision, using our Reaction lights measuring to the millisecond.

Visual attention, timing & anticipation

Evaluating decision-making, attention control, and timing under performance demands.

Eye Health

The first step is to ensure that the eyes are healthy and functioning with no pathological problems.

Reading ability and Speed (words per minute)

Measuring the accuracy of the eye muscles and fixation while reading. This can determine eye-jumps; eye instability and comprehension

Who Should Have a Sports Vision Assessment?

Sports Vision assessments are suitable for:

  • School and youth athletes

  • Competitive and club-level athletes

  • Elite and professional sportspeople

  • Recreational athletes

  • Athletes recovering from injury or concussion

Even athletes with “perfect eyesight” may have visual skill limitations that affect performance.

What to Expect During the Assessment

  • Appointments are longer than a standard eye test

  • Testing is interactive, engaging, and athlete-focused

  • Results are explained clearly and in practical terms

  • Recommendations are personalised to the athlete’s sport and goals

Parents and athletes are encouraged to ask questions throughout the process.

Your Results & Next Steps

Following the assessment, we will:

  • Explain how your visual skills influence sporting performance

  • Identify visual strengths and areas for improvement

  • Recommend appropriate visual correction, if required

  • Determine whether visual skills training would be beneficial

Not every athlete requires training — care is always individualised and evidence-based.

The First Step to Better Performance

A Sports Vision Assessment provides valuable insight into how your visual system performs in sport and lays the groundwork for targeted, measurable improvement.
